The first Anime I have watched was probably a 1989 Shonen Anime called "The Jungle Book" airing in the National TV of Bangladesh in the mid 90s with Bengali Dub. As a 6/7 year old, I was crazy about the show. However, I didn't exactly know that it was indeed an anime up until very recently.
The first time however I thought I was watching an Anime was when I saw Pokemon a few years later. I who always loved a good story, found no story in it. I also watched a few episodes of the great Dragon Ball Z but somehow was never able to get into it. The other Anime I watched in the 90s and early 2000 was Rurouni Kenshin or as it was being called Samurai X, this time fully aware of it being an Anime. I found it entertaining but not enough to declare myself a fan.
My sincere love for Anime came rather late, when I was in High School. Despite my disinterest in Anime, I started watching Bleach on Friday night Anime Program Bionix in YTV and boy did I fall in love! It was Bleach that got me interested in Anime. There were a few other Anime I was watching at the time among which I also liked Detective Conan. However Bleach is what I continued watching.
We found episodes on Youtube to watch, mind you it was the friendly Youtube from 2006/2007 era. We eventually ran out of Dubbed episodes and stumbled upon Sub. That was the first time me trying to watch a series/movie in a language I didn't understand at all with Subtitles to the rescue. No, we were not fond of it at first and it took some time to get used to hearing Japanese. Nevertheless the pull of the story kept us glued to the screen. And I did jump ship soon and started preferring subbed episodes over dubbed. I felt there was a touch of authenticity that was lost in the Dubbed version and I am still on that ship to this day.
Though I started my true Anime journey with Bleach and found another the then very popular show Naruto some what ridiculous, Naruto ended up becoming my most favorite anime of all time and holds a very special spot in my heart. I think that initial feeling came mostly from all the screeching sounds Naruto kept making and to the then very serious me, the main protagonist of the show just seemed like an annoying little brat. He did grew on me very much as I mentioned before and it seems Naruto does have that mysterious power of making people fall in love with him, just like they keep mentioning it through out the show.
Bleach and Naruto were however followed by numerous Manga I have read so far. As I started University not long after I watched Naruto, I no longer had time to actually sit down and watch Anime. Instead I found reading Manga much more convenient at the time as I could consume the stories I wanted to really fast that way. There were a few other Anime I watched aside from Bleach and Naruto, like Shougo Chara, Ouran High School Host Club, One Punch Man etc. Some I finished and some I didn't. My most recent favorite is Uchuu Kyodai or Space Brothers, which stirs the dead fire in me in a very depressing way. Nevertheless I love it and it is what I am watching at the moment.
