Cancun was a beautiful destination of sun, beach and pure lazy days. I don't know how much should I emphasize on sun because we were there during Hurricane season and it rained a little bit. And it wasn't just any other hurricane, it was Category 5 Hurricane Irma. Irma wasn't the only natural disaster we got to feel from far during the trip. We also felt the major pacific earthquake that struck Mexico City sending buildings and roads tumbling down and causing casualties. But I will get to that in a moment.
It was a trip not planned well ahead of time. We wanted to fit in a weeks vacation at the very last moment before the summer ended. Initially the plan was to be in some Caribbean island, preferably Cuba. However after doing some quick research it seemed Cancun would suit us for the moment and there we were, sitting in-front of the pool, overlooking the beautiful Caribbean sea.
Nothing can describe the pure beauty, the exhilarating feeling of looking at the vast, turquoise ocean while floating on the pool, or floating on the pool, looking up at the bright full moon over our head with crashing sound of waves in the background.
We planned to do some sight seeing before heading to Cancun. At the top of our list of choice was Chichen Itza and Tulum ruins since we have always been curious about Mayan civilization and do have special interest in ancient history/archeology. However we ended up staying in the resort for the entire 5 days, simply lazing around, swimming in the pool and then playing in the ocean in turn. And I do think the resort we stayed in, Westin Lagunamar is partly to blame, cause the scene was just breath taking. The huge infinity pool overlooking the ocean, our room with ocean view just presented us with all the reasons to enjoy every moment in there.
We did take stroll outside, walked around in the mall right in-front of the resort which was nice, however the extreme heat and humidity was a little discouraging for us land of winter rats.
There were other reasons however for us to stay inside. We were not sure if we would be hit with any storm on our way to Chichen Itza. Because you see, when we were at Cancun, around 500 Km away Hurricane Irma was raging on in Cuba and subsequently in southern Florida leaving behind a trail of destruction. Our trip was definitely filled with a low key dread, with the news channel on constantly showing hurricane footages and news of severe destruction. However as the resort staffs reassured us over and over again, we barely got some light rain for a few moment and momentary dimness of the sun. It was almost a light rain on an almost sunny day.
However the blue turquoise still ocean was there no more! The ocean went crazy on the 3rd day of our arrival. The waves were crashing on the shore with thunderous roar, lifeguards preventing people from swimming and only allowing to dip in their ankles. Though I wouldn't say everyone one exactly listened.
Though the madness of the ocean prevented us from carrying on our plan of going parasailing, we did get to experience what I call a hurricane infested ocean. Playing tag with the ocean, running in and out of it, an imaginary game of survival (exaggeration intended).
We even got to see and dig out turtle eggs during one of our early morning walks on the beach. We saw a man, who looked like a life guard was digging in the sand close to the water. Curious, we stood beside him and to our pleasant surprise, we realized he was digging out turtle eggs. He noticed our interest and let us hold one of the eggs. And then he moved on to another near by spot, trusting us to dig out the rest of the eggs and put it in the basket. Me and mom took turn to dig out a few hundreds eggs from that hole which was then taken to be buried in the sand a little bit away from the water, inside a secured fenced area on . It definitely was a unique experience!
And lastly the beautiful nights, full moon in the sky, there was nothing like it. We went in the pool, enjoying the sound of the sea, watching the blood red moon rising over the sea and afterwards sitting in the hot tub taking everything in.
After our usual late dinner, we would sat on the balcony, watching the moon go up and up and further away, feeling the Caribbean night breeze on the face.
We ended our trip with a little celebration. On our last night in Cancun, we celebrated my sister's birth day, on the very same balcony, with a little piece of cake we got from the restaurant on the resort premise, a perfect ending to a beautiful vacation.
