A lively walk by the Dubai fountain

I have a great interest in earth's formation. I grew up in a tropical country, a plain land with many rivers criss-crossing across the terrain. I moved to the cold cold north in my teenage years, a land of lakes. I have seen beautiful mountains in Europe, but I have never seen desert. Not until the beginning of 2017 anyway when I decided it was finally time. We decided on one and a half week trip to middle east. A 3 days stay at Dubai following a week in Oman, a long waited mother-daughter trip.

Dubai was a fun filled 3 days. It certainly wasn't a typical Dubai itinerary. We did not cover a lot of iconic Dubai attractions. Rather our plan was according to convenience and we focused on trying to get a feel of the city in the short period of time we had.

Highlight of the trip was the realization that we could eat anything we wanted, no asking 20 questions about if the food had meat or alcohol in it. As Muslim Torontonians, one of our first world problem is that we have so many food options, cuisines from around the world, but we can't really enjoy it. The meat isn't halal unless it's a middle eastern/north African restaurant. And even if we find fish or vegetarian options in the menu, there is a possibility that it was cooked with alcohol.

We stayed in the financial district, 2 minutes walk from the Metro station, 2 station away from Dubai mall. We also found an Arabian street style restaurant very close to the Hotel. We had most of our meals there and somehow due to the good food and settings, it became the go to place during the trip. Not to mention, I finally got to try Turkish coffee, which after much anticipation… I found out wasn't really my thing.

We also visited the gold souk and boy oh boy have I ever seen so much wealth and shine in one place before! It was so huge, we couldn't finish checking out the entire market. Also, all the shops had their doors open, huge gold jewelleries, some almost looked like full body armour, were on display. You could go in and out of any shops, take pictures/videos without anyone looking at you strangely/suspiciously. Great manner and hospitality indeed.

Burj Khalif was in our list of things to do and we ended up visiting the top most floor you can be at. It was a little disappointing given the weather and a little expensive. I hoping I would get a glimpse of nearby desert, but the air was so dusty that we could hardly even see areas few blocks away from the building. The guided tour was interesting. They served Arabian coffee and dates while we waited to be taken in, which tasted totally different from the coffee I am used to having. They also served drinks and sweets but the lower level observation deck was some how more fun to be at. It was more crowded but we spent a good few hours there, just chilling and looking out the city.

We absolutely enjoyed Dubai fountain. It was a magnificent sight and definitely the best part of our trip.

We ended our stay in Dubai with a chill rooftop pool side sun bathing, enjoying the Dubai skyline.
